Creative Gros Morne and Bonne Bay Aquarium & Research Station are excited to welcome the artist Bethany Mackenzie at BBARS and pioneer our new Art and Science residency program.
Bethany MacKenzie (she/they) is a Queer, emerging, interdisciplinary artist and administrator currently residing in Bonavista, NL. MacKenzie graduated from Memorial University in 2021 with a BFA in Visual Arts, and is now acting Director of Union House Arts. Additionally they are the Treasurer of the Association of Artist Run Centers of Atlantic Canada (ATLANTIS) and sat as a member of the 2022-23 Curatorial Advisory committee for the Bonavista Biennale.
Their practice utilizes routine and repetition to explore themes of childhood, memory, and Queer identity within abject subjects. Abjection, in their practice, is seen as an object or “thing” that inspires feelings of both comfort and discomfort in (un)familiar subjects. Within that, her work attempts to walk the line of “in-betweenness,” in order to understand moments of tension in shifting historic and contemporary contexts and perspectives.
