Skivvers Fibre Studio & Wool Craft
Skivvers Fibre Studio & Wool Craft is located at 165 Main Street in Cow Head. This new studio has a sign out front to make it easier to find!
About the Studio: Skivvers is a brand new addition to the Cow Head visitor experience, opening in June 2021. The studio is the culmination of years of dreaming and planning and the expression of a lifetime love of wool and knitting. The space is an old home that turned out to be just perfect for a fibre studio, and this summer will see the beginnings of a dyer’s garden developing around the property. Here I’ll be processing and dyeing wool fibre, with an emphasis on natural dyes. In the shop, you will find a variety of my own work as well as that of other talented artisans, with a focus on work that is created from wool.
About the Artist: Artist Veronica Bavis is first and foremost a knitter. She has memories of sitting in the rocking chair with her grandmother, learning to knit, and once she started she just couldn’t stop. This has developed into a desire to learn the whole process, from first wash of a fleece to spinning the fibre into yarn, as well as learning the techniques to use the plants around us to impart a variety of color.
How does Gros Morne inspire your creativity? Those glorious sunsets over Shallow Bay! I’ve always been drawn to color in my knitted work, and those purples/oranges/pinks that come together to make up our sunsets are definitely a creative happy place.
What can visitors expect during Open Studio Days? On each of these weekends, visitors will be able see demonstrations of the various stages of wool processing (including washing, picking, carding, and spinning) as well as dyeing.
