Creative Gros Morne is pleased to welcome the latest Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador Gros Morne Craft Resident
Anna Torma
Originally from Hungary, Anna Torma has been creating and exhibiting in Canada since 1988. Her interest in working with textiles goes back to early childhood when she learned to sew, knit, crochet and embroider from her mother and grandmothers. Torma graduated with a degree in Textile Art and Design from the Hungarian University of Applied Arts, Budapest, Hungary, where she studied from 1974-79. She has been a practicing, exhibiting artist since that time; producing mainly large-scale hand embroidered wall hangings. Her work has been exhibited internationally. FIBRE WORKSHOP WITH ANNA TORMA
Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1, 10am–4pm each day, Merchant Warehouse, Woody Point
Anna uses silk fabrics and threads to create both flat and relief pieces. She will introduce her workshop with a presentation about her practice as a fibre artist and demonstrate with pictures and fabrics how a project usually develops from inspiration to design, execution and final selection.
Using a basic vocabulary of hand stitching, the group will sew together different pieces of fabrics and found objects, playing with colours, texture and patterns, learning different ways and techniques to create an even surface from fragments. Equally important in this workshop are the aesthetics of the final piece and meditative quality of the hand-working process.
Previous experience with hand sewing and embroidery is an asset, but not necessary.
Materials: Most materials are provided, but please bring your own favourite collection of vintage fabrics, embroidery remnants or found fibres. We also suggest that you bring drawings, photographs, inspirational images or personal memorabilia to help as you work on your own design.
Tools: Bring your own needle box, embroidery needles and threads, scissors, thimble, and embroidery hoop.
Fee: Your fee of $50 includes lunch and most materials.
MENTORING
During her residency, Anna will work one-on-one with two craftspeople in the Gros Morne region to provide advice in design, colour and presentation as you develop products for sale in local, provincial or national markets. If you are interested in taking part in a multi-session mentorship, please contact us for details. Fee is $50 per two-hour session.
